Swashbuckling vintage metal etched buckle

This great little buckle is made from metal. It's been etched or carved quite deeply with feathery swirls. There is a loop at the back and this buckle possibly belongs on a shoe. It appears to have been cleaned in the past and there is some powdery residue in the crevices.
